How to Find Your Tyre Size
Not sure what tyre size your car needs?
You can find the information you need on the sidewall of your existing tyres.
It will usually appear as a sequence similar to:
205/55 R16 91V
Each part tells you something different about the tyre, including its width, profile, wheel size, load capacity and speed rating.
If you are replacing your tyres, it is important to make sure the tyres fitted are suitable for your vehicle.
Watch our quick guide to see where your tyre size is located and how to read the markings on your tyre.
What Do the Numbers on a Tyre Mean?
Please note that all values are for example only.
1 Tyre Width – 205
The first number is the width of the tyre in millimetres, measured from sidewall to sidewall. In this example, the tyre is 205mm wide.
2 Aspect Ratio / Tyre Profile – 55
The second number describes the sidewall height as a percentage of the tyre width. Here, the sidewall height is 55% of the tyre width.
3 Tyre Construction – R
The letter R means the tyre uses radial construction, the standard construction used for most modern passenger-vehicle tyres.
4 Rim Size – 16
This number is the diameter of the wheel rim in inches. This tyre is designed for a 16-inch wheel.
5 Load Index – 92
The load index identifies the maximum load the tyre is designed to carry when used at the correct pressure.
6 Speed Rating – Y
The final letter is the tyre's speed rating. Replacement tyres must have a rating suitable for the vehicle.
Where Can I Find My Tyre Size?
Your tyre size is printed on the sidewall of your tyre.
Look around the outside wall of the tyre for a sequence similar to 205/55 R16 91V.
The same information may also be available in your vehicle handbook or on a vehicle information label, depending on the manufacturer.
If you are unsure, a Modern Tyres technician can help confirm the correct tyre specification for your vehicle.
